A glass of water story

History

A professor walked through a room while teaching stress management to his students. As he held up a glass of water, everyone expected to be asked the 'glass half full or half empty' question. Instead, with a smile on his face, he asked, "How much does this glass of water weigh?" ". The answers varied from 200 to 500 grams.

He replied, “The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I'm going to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it's no problem. If I hold it for an hour, I will have pain in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will go numb and feel paralyzed. In each case the weight of the glass does not change, but the longer I hold it the heavier it becomes. »

He continued, “The stresses and worries of life are like this glass of water. Think about it for a while and nothing happens. Think about it a little longer and they start to hurt. And if you think about it all day, you'll feel paralyzed – unable to do anything. »

It is important to remember to let go of your stress. As early in the evening as possible, lay down all your burdens. Do not wear them during the evening and at night.

Reflection

It is difficult in life to avoid moments of stress or worry. However it is important to keep in mind that these situations are facts and what counts are not the facts, but rather what you do with them! In fact, we spend a lot of energy on things that we have no control over: we get angry, we feel sorry for ourselves, we complain, we are scandalized even over things that have already happened, and we protect ourselves, we gets scared of things that could possibly potentially hypothetically happen to us. Wouldn't it therefore be more relevant to use all this energy on things on which we can really act?

Our brain is wired to spot danger. It is therefore natural to see what is wrong first rather than seeing the positive side of what is happening to us and the opportunity that arises from it. When you feel helpless, when you feel like you can't change anything, change your perspective. Don't cling to negative things that can only hurt you, think of all that brings you joy, and enjoy all that life has to offer.

Remember to put down your glass of water, and start thinking about yourself! 🙂

  1. The glass is neither half full nor half empty: it is simply twice as big...
But that is not the question apparently! 😉
