A phone story

The story

A little boy walks into a store, grabs a carton of soda and drags it to the phone. He climbs on the cardboard so that he can reach the buttons and dials a number. The store manager observes and listens to the conversation.

Boy : “Madam, could you hire me to mow your lawn?”

Lady (on the other end of the line): “I already have someone to mow my lawn. “

Boy : “Madam, I would mow your lawn for half the price of the person who mows your lawn now.”

Lady : “I am very happy with the person currently mowing my lawn.”

Boy (with more perseverance): “Madam, I would even sweep your sidewalk, so that on Sunday you will have the most beautiful lawn in all of Palm Beach (Florida).”

Lady : "No thanks."

With a smile on his face, the little boy puts down the receiver. The store manager, who had been listening to the whole conversation, approaches the boy.

Manager : “My boy… I like your attitude; I like that positive mindset and would love to offer you a job.”

Boy : "No thanks."

Manager : “But you were begging for one.”

Boy : “No sir, I was just evaluating my performance in the job I already had. I'm the one working for that lady I was talking to!”

Reflection

A singer uses a monitor to hear his voice, a dancer trains in front of mirrors to see his movements, a cook tastes his dish to ensure its seasoning. All have one thing in common: the search for feedback on their performance and therefore indirectly on their person. It is not always easy to find your place today and feedback is a good way to get there. Indeed, even if it can present itself as a danger most of the time (because we often avoid what can displease us), having an outside view has an irrefutable benefit: that of showing us what we do not always see. of ourselves whether in what we do, or in the way we do it.

The combination of different external visions with our personal feelings then allows us to free ourselves from assumptions (often a source of disappointment), to open up new perspectives and finally bring us closer and closer to our deep identity. We are not perfect (sorry to tell you! :-P) and accepting it is already a first step towards a better "we", calmer and more fulfilled.

How to do ? For my part, I simply asked my colleagues (by email) what they considered to be my main strengths and what their suggestions for improvement would be. Asking them to describe me in 3 words could also have been an interesting experience! The hardest part was, I admit, when I clicked on the "send" button, but the result was worth it: it allowed me to learn a lot about myself! This also generated a momentum for others who then launched themselves! 🙂

The bottle doesn't matter as long as you're drunk, right? All options are good, the important thing is to take the first step.
